Jihva for Jackfruit ~ Sweet and Spicy Jackfruit

jackfruit, three ways
jackfruit three ways — sweet ripe yellow jackfruit, pale raw jackfruit, golden toasted jackfruit seeds

It’s Jihva for Jackfruit, hosted by very talented Bee of Jugalbandi!
Thanks for having us, Bee!

Sometimes (ok, lots of times!) I have the craziest ideas. I can’t say anything more about this dish. I loved Supriya’s Accidental Diva and sweet Jackfruit Idli. Then there was our hostess Bee’s Spring Onion Dal with its appealing kalonji. I also read Asha’s blogs regularly and admire how she makes tasty seem easy (and introduced me to Kitchen King for those hurried evenings!) — but I don’t blame them for my crazy ideas! 😉

Sweet and Spicy Jackfruit

For the jackfruit:

1/2 can green jackfruit, drained and chopped (about 3/4 c)
1 piece ripe (sweet) canned jackfruit, drained and cut into fine dice (about 1/8 c)

1 tsp ghee
1 onion, diced
1/2 tsp Kitchen King (or your favorite masala)
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp amchur powder
1 TB jaggery
1/4 tsp salt

For the sauce:

1 tsp ghee
2-3 dried red chiles
few curry leaves
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp kalonji seeds
1/4 c yogurt
salt to taste

For the garnish:

1/4 c jackfruit seeds, toasted
1/4 c dried jackfruit chips

Boil the green jackfruit in plain water until tender — about 15 minutes.

In another pan, heat 1 tsp ghee and add the chopped onion. Saute until golden. Add the turmeric and kitchen king and the reserved green jackfruit, amchur powder, jaggery, and about 1/2 c water. Cook a few minutes, stirring, until the water is absorbed — then remove from the heat. When cool, grind the mixture coarsely and set aside.

Make the sauce:

On medium-high heat melt the other 1 tsp ghee. Add the mustard, curry leaves, chiles and kalonji. When they’re sizzling and fragrant, stir in the ripe jackfruit and remove from the heat. Off the heat, add beaten yogurt and the reserved green jackfruit mixture. Stir well and serve hot. Garnish with jackfruit chips and toasted jackfruit seeds. A dollop of plain yogurt goes nicely, too.
